How to Find a Cheap Flight to New York City

For most, a visit to The Big Apple starts at one of the airports. Whether you wish to arrive via Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA) or Newark (EWR), it is easy to find a cheap flight to New York City.

Here are a 6 easy ways to locate a great deal on your flight to NYC:

1. Travel Websites  Most do-it-yourself travelers know of the good rates that are available on the online travel sites.  These travel websites help you search for all of available deals for airfare, hotels, etc with one entry of your desired dates and destination.  For some this is the best way to find a great rate for a flight to New York City because it allows them control of all available choices and they don’t have to look at multiple s

The top websites are obvious: Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz.  But there are so many others on the web that may also offer an outstanding price for your next flight to New York City.  It is wise to look around before purchasing.  It is possible that an hour or so of surfing the web can save you a small fortune when it comes to booking your next flight to NYC.

2. Airline Websites  The recent changes going on in the air industry have been in the consumers favor.  For those willing to look, most of the major airlines offer discounts on selected routes and they post them right on their website.  They are usually called “special deals,” “special offers,” “hot deals,” or some other related phrase.  And you can really find a cheap flight to New York City this way.

A good suggestion is to use the information gained by research on a large travel website, then follow up on those airlines’ website.  For example, if you find that American Airlines offers the best price on Travelocity, then go to American Airlines’ website and  search for the same flight to New York City.   You almost always will save a little more with the airlines themselves.  Hey, even if its just $10 USD…that can pay for lunch one day in NYC.

3. Last Minutes Deals  Don’t underestimate last minute deals, but don’t live buy them alone either.  There is a place for everything.  There are some sites that specialize in last minute deals for a flight to New York City and these deals are usually offered on all of the other travel sites too.

A good tip is to check the prices for your airfare if booked now for the future date of departure and also check the last minute flights to your destination at the same time. If you find that waiting until the last minute to book your flight could save you a bundle, then you may want to consider that as a part of your travel plans. Just be sure to be flexible in case you cannot get on the flight that you had originally planned.

4. Travel Agents  For those that feel they have better things to do with their time than to sit on a computer searching for a great “deal” on airfare, just to save $10, then you should consult a travel agent.  These professionals spend their day finding great deals for all travel and certainly will have a cheap flight to New York City ready for you to purchase.   Best of all, they can plan your entire trip if you prefer.

More than likely, they have been to NYC and can make recommendations to suit your travel needs and expectations.  You can utilize the services of a travel agent both online and/or in person.

5. Travel Newsletters  If you are the planning sort and you are interested in finding a great price on a flight to New York City, then it would be in your best interest to sign up to receive a newsletter from a site that specializes in travel deals.  One of my favorites is TravelZoo.  They email me once a week with the latest, hottest web deals for travel all over the world.  Sometimes they even send me travel deals that are specific to my area.  This is an awesome service and I have caught some excellent deals this way (with a little patience).   They usually have a least one New York travel deal a week.

6. Travel Reward Credit Card  Also check with your current credit cards or consider signing up for a credit card that offers travel rewards.  There is no better deal than a free flight to New York City just by redeeming points from one of these cards.

If you love to travel and love to save money, then you really should consider a card that give you points that can be used toward travel.  Some of the best that we have found include: Miles by Discover Card, Blue Sky from American Express, and really any of the cards from American Express

What some frequent (and responsible) travelers do is use these travel reward credit cards to make every monthly expense possible go on these cards (AND pay them off every month) for the sole purpose of racking up more points to be used for travel as fast as possible.  If you are good with credit cards and love to travel, then you should check into the benefits these cards offer.
